About Xiao-Feng Qi

Xiao-Feng Qi (Ph.D. EE, UConn, 1992; BS EE, Jiao Tong University, 1985) is an accomplished technical director who led and contributed to industrial R&D underpinning the mobile broadband expansion for the past three decades. He joined DSP Software Engineering Inc., a speech/modem startup near Boston, MA, in 1992. From 1994 to 2000, he was successively with AT&T (which became Lucent Technologies), Globespan Semiconductors, and Level One Communications, where he delivered key modem algorithms for voiceband and DSL products. In 2000 he joined Intel through acquisition, and became Senior Director, Advanced Research, in 2001, where he led the Broadband Systems Group in developing multi-standard modem platforms, followed by advanced MIMO receiver design for Wi-Fi, and standards contributions to WiMAX and LTE. He joined Broadcom in 2008 and became Technical Manager of the Modem Systems Group in 2012, where he led advanced receiver design for the company’s 2G and 4G handset chipsets. Between 2014 and 2021 he was Senior Director at Futurewei technologies, Inc., where he headed the Radio Algorithms Research Department in its organic research and university collaboration on massive MIMO, millimeter wave communication and radio resource optimization for 4G, 5G and beyond-5G networks.

Dr. Qi joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Delaware, as a Research Scientist in the spring of 2021, and a Full Research Professor in May 2022. His research interest lies in cross-disciplinary approaches to real-world wireless signal processing problems, including novel optoelectronic system architectures and algorithms for distributed coherent sensing and communication networks operating in complex and dynamic radio environments.
