About Xiao-Feng Qi

Xiao-Feng Qi (Ph.D. EE, UConn, 1992; BS EE, Jiao Tong University, 1985) is an accomplished research director and technical manager for algorithms underpinning digital communications for the last 30 years.

Dr. Qi joined DSP Software Engineering Inc. in 1992 and delivered world’s first Low Delay CELP voice compressor for commercial use. Between 1994 and 2000, he was with AT&T, Globespan Semiconductors, and Level One Communications, where he delivered key modem algorithms for voiceband and DSL products. In 2000 he joined Intel through acquisition, and became Senior Director, Advanced Research, in 2001, where he led the broadband systems group in multi-standard modem architecture for the x86 platform, followed by advanced MIMO receiver design for Wi-Fi, and standards contributions to WiMAX and LTE. He joined Broadcom in 2008 and became Technical Manager of the Modem Systems Group in 2012, where he led receiver design for the company’s GPRS/EDGE (2G) and LTE (4G) handset chipsets. Between 2014 and 2021 he was Senior Director, Radio Algorithms Research at Futurewei technologies, Inc., where he led 5G/6G base station research in massive MIMO, mmW frontend and network resource optimization.

Dr. Qi joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, the University of Delaware, as a Research Scientist in the spring of 2021, and a Research Full Professor in May 2022. He also serves as Chief Strategy Officer of Phase Sensitive Innovations, Inc. since May 2021.

Dr. Qi’s research interests lie primarily in applying statistical signal processing and machine learning techniques to challenges of next generation wireless networks, including leveraging RF-Photonics techniques for millimeter wave and sub-Terahertz radio front ends for beyond-5G communication and sensing networks.
