About David Young
Prof. Young currently teaches three courses in electric power design and motor/generator applications. His research interests are in (1) electrical insulation quality inspection, and failure analysis, (2) partial discharge detection, and (3) development of high accuracy transformer equivalent circuits. He has over 44 years experience designing, inspecting, and trouble-shooting aerial and underground electric power distribution facilities through 35kV and teaching all aspects of electric power engineering from basic electricity and electrical safety to design in compliance with the National Electrical Code® and the National Electrical Safety Code®. He graduated from U of D in Electrical Engineering in 1971 and worked for Delmarva Power and Light Co.® for 35 years. He worked his way from Junior Engineer up to Senior Consulting Engineer, one of the top engineers in the company. He started teaching with the U of D in 2007. He designed and constructed the ECE Department’s Electric Power Engineering Research Lab with various electric power test equipment including a 0 to 130,000 Volt voltage source and a 0 to 6,000 Amp current source. As an engineering consultant, he performs investigation and testifies in court as an expert witness in accidents involving electric power distribution facilities. He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers® (IEEE®), the Delaware Association of Professional Engineers® (DAPE®), and an inspector member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors® (IAEI®). He has published over 60 peer reviewed technical articles on various electric power subjects and teaches disaster preparedness with the Delaware Emergency Management Agency® (DEMA®).
