Reverse Engineering Cortical Function from Changes in Brain Oscillations in Neurological and Psychiatric Disease

Abstract:
Over the last decade, the circuitry and mechanisms underlying cortical oscillations have become better understood. New findings have also illuminated the role of alpha, theta, gamma, and high frequency oscillations in cognitive processes. There are dramatic alterations in these brain rhythms in a number of neurological and psychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, and seizure disorders.
I will review some of these recent findings, and discuss our attempts to use computational models to identify possible sites of dysfunction within the circuits that might give rise to these alterations in rhythms.
