So how is this done you ask? Here are some examples to help give you an idea and guide you along. Remember the topics are very broad and this allows much room for sending messages out according to your interests.
With special emphasis on the Topic of the Month, Resident Student and Mentor PIs along with the rest of the community will engage in discussions and provide information on issues which relate to the categories listed below. Resident PIs must send a minimum of three messages, of this nature, per week . All categories do not have to be addressed by the resident PIs during their host dates. Addressing a variety is encouraged and addressing at least two categories are required.
The category descriptors below should be used as a general guide. This is not meant to be a rigid rule book. The definitions can be expanded upon within reason and wherever appropriate. Note: It also should be noted that we recognize that some of the categories may lend themselves to be more appropriate for or relevant to the topic of the month,

1. Computer / Internet
- Find relevant information on the web, describe the information, share the web site, share your thoughts and opinions.
2. Science & Technology
- Find information that is computer or internet related.
3. News / Current Events
- Share information on any branch of science or type of technology old or new. Make sure the information is in your own words. Include any references. Share your experiences, thoughts and or theories. Ask the group questions. Describe how the science or technology relates to our society; its importance to you personally and society as a whole.
4. Disability
- Discuss and share information on a current news event. Ask members questions and for their opinions. Research and report on pertinent information of the past that may be appropriate.
5. Education & Careers
- Discuss and share information on particular disabilities. Relay any personal experiences. Ask the group questions and for their opinions.
- Discuss policy related to pertinent issues.
- Discuss and share information on education and or careers. Research colleges and vocational institutions. Find out more about how they operate. Describe and discuss information regarding disability issues.
6. Networking - to provide opportunities, and internships / apprenticeships
- Interview both students and mentors; solicit their opinions on various matters.
7. Personal Showcase - school project or achievement
- Research either online or in person opportunities that may be of interest to you and community members. Contact the resource or individual on the community's behalf. If your contact has e-mail access ask if they might answer questions for a few days from members who are interested in what this person might be doing or be able to provide. This could be related to internships, employment, college or vocational institutions and explorations of special interest. Relay all your findings to the group.
- Discuss a personal achievement and or project. Provide information on the web.
Examples - Topic of the Month: Scientists with Disabilities
- Identify and explain in your own words the work or contribution of a scientist with a disability. (cat 2)
- Provide information and sources on the Interenet. (cat 1)
- Describe and provide information on his disability and how it affects (or might have affected ) him. (cat 4)
- Identify a computer scientist with a disability and discuss what work he is involved in and his contributions. (cat 1 or 2)
- Communicate and or interview a scientist with a disability. Share this information. (cat 6)
- Share & discuss a science project or science related achievement. (cat 7)
