How Our Community Operates

Every few weeks a new Principal Investigator (PI) team will inspire, inquire, teach, learn and facilitate. The structure of the system serves as a guide for encouraging and channeling the direction of information exchange. Overall, each student and mentor has much input in helping shape and unite our community.

Students get to take the lead, with support from the resident mentor PI as well as, from the rest of the online community. Students also work as a team whenever possible. Resident PIs will be decided upon at least two weeks prior to their expected host date. Students and Mentors choose the dates they wish to lead the group. This is done on a first come first serve basis.

Resident Student PI

Resident Student PIs send out a minimum of three messages per week based on the main topic of the month and subcategories below. Messages are a mix of researched information, editorials, and questions. The categories that are addressed on each topic of the month are as follows:

Students are encouraged to identify online activities that interest them and organize the community members to participate. They have the opportunity to create online materials; an online magazine or newspaper, for instance. If students are passionate about particular projects, they can let the community know and encourage everyone to help the projects come to fruition.

Beyond the three theme-based messages per week, students are encouraged to send as many messages as they wish. These messages do not have to be related to the categories and topics of the month.

Resident Mentor PI

Resident Mentor PIs support, in any way possible, Student PIs in their efforts to lead and interact with the community. A few days before their host date, they e-mail the student PI and let them know they are available and ready to help.

The Community - students, mentors, and advocates

The community members actively participate in discussions, following resident PIs' direction. At any time, they also can contribute messages (related or unrelated) outside of this direction.

The Lists

There are three main lists of community members:

In general, discussions are held in the main list which includes all members; students, mentors and advocates. However, members may choose to discuss an issue with only one group and send messages to the appropriate list.

** PIs send messages related to topic of the month to the general list.
